Evocative Type
The Opportunity
The goal of this magazine layout was to take a single word and effectively implement it into a magazine design.
My word for this project was “SQUEEZE”.
Requirements for this project included:
Fully design a magazine cover page that effectively evokes the given word
Effectively layout typography across magazine spread applying type techniques (Folios, Running Footers/Headers, Grammar, Hierarchy)
Effectively evoke the word throughout the magazine
The first thing I thought of when I heard “Squeeze” was squeezing an orange. I began drawing out the idea of the words forming in the shape of an orange and imagining what would happen as you squeezed the orange which is why I added the additional juice drops. To elevate I also added white highlights to add more definition to the illustrations. I completed these illustrations using Procreate.
What I Did
The outcome was a well rounded and cohesive magazine layout that effectively evoked the word “Squeeze”. The cover page illustration came out exactly how I intended with bright colours and mimicking the look of an orange being squeezed. While the typography I chose matched the word well, with rounded sans serif of varying line heights. I specifically chose the “Speaks Louder” font to give the viewer the feeling that those words are speaking louder. Overall a project I am proud of.
